Biography

My research is focussed on characterising plant and algal cell walls with the aim of better understanding how: 1) their optimal composition has been impactedaltered during evolution and adaptation; 2) they are altered, in extant plants and algae, by biotic (e.g. the presence of pathogenspestsparasites) and abiotic (e.g. wind, drought, etc) stress and during the growth and development; 3) their components may be used in biotechnology. My teaching (1st-4th year undergraduate) reflects my research interests and I use a range of technologies with the aim of stimulating interest and supporting students with a range of learning styles. I am handling editor for Annals of Botany for submissions on plant cell walls and Assistant Reviews Editor.   Listed: Popper on the International Plant Names Index http:www.ipni.orgindex.html

Research Interests

Plant and algal cell walls including, but not limited to, their composition, structure, diversity, evolution, and adaptation to the abiotic- and biotic- environment (e.g. duting plant-plant interactions such as parasitism), and their applications (including stimulation of the plant immune system).

Teaching Interests

Plant and algal biochemistry focussed on its diversity and adaptation, and physiology including cell growth
