Dr Yvonne Finn is an Associate Professor in the Discipline of Medical Education, School of Medicine, University of Galway, Ireland. Dr Finn’s higher education qualifications are undergraduate degrees in Medicine (MB BCh BAO) and science (BSc), a MSc in Health Sciences (Clinical Education) and an MD in Medicine. She is a recipient of the President’s Award for Teaching Excellence, 2022. Dr Finn has leadership roles in the undergraduate medicine programme in curricular development, teaching methodologies and assessment across the medical curriculum. Dr Finn is contributing to development of a revised medical curriculum, leads on clinical and communication skills in the early years of the undergraduate medicine programme, and teaches on a number of modules in the Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Education in University of Galway. She is module lead of an international module on Cultural Awareness in research planning: an interprofessional perspective
Dr Finn has led on faculty development symposia and sat on steering groups of the Irish Network of Health Educators conference. Dr Finn is chair of a Special Interest Group in healthcare communication education research in ICCH (International Association for Communication in Healthcare) and sits on the educational advisory committee of the National Institute for Prevention and Cardiovascular Health.
Dr Finn has extensive experience supervising research in health professions education at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, up to PhD. Her research interests are in communication skills, health literacy and new technologies, such as virtual reality (VR) in health professions education. She has collaborated on a number of ERAMSUS+ KA220 awards with European partners and is currently partner PI on an ERASMUS+ KA220 award developing VR scenarios using AI technologies for communication skills training in medical education. Dr Finn has presented at more than 30 professional and educational conferences and has published widely in peer-reviewed journals in health professions education. Dr Finn is also recipient of research awards from HRB, Wellcome Trust and University of Galway Millennium fund.
