PhD projects

My research interests focus on investigations of ecosystem functions. Specifically, I am interested in terrestrial-aquatic linkages between wetlands and small streams to promote conservation of these ecosystems and to explore how anthropogenic changes in habitat alter ecosystem function. One of my objectives is to assess land use impacts in order to develop Best Management Practices relevant for stakeholders in Ireland. In addition, current EU directives require the conservation of natural habitats and wild fauna and flora. In this capacity, I am interested in enhancing our understanding of wetland and aquatic species and habitats suitable for inclusion in the conservation programs. In addition to research, I seek to involve the Public - through citizen science and community knowledge initiatives (CKI), as this is often a key to successful conservation of natural resources.

Personal profile

Biography

Terry received a Bachelors of Biology from SUNY Oswego, USA in 1994; and then pursued a career in private environmental consulting. Following this, he completed a PhD in Ecology and Environmental Science at the University of Maine, USA in 2008. His dissertation focused on the contributions of small headwater wetlands to downstream systems.

At the University of Galway, Terry's research interests involve the assessment of ecosystem functions and services, with a particular focus on wetland ecology and conservation. For more information on my research lab and activities visit his research lab link.

Terry is currently looking for interested post-graduates (PhD, Post-docs) to work on the following projects:

- Wetland mapping and functional assessments,

- Restoration techniques and carbon balance assessments,

- Blanket bog ecology and conservation,

- Alternative use(s) of agriculture on degraded organic soils.

After receiving his undergraduate degree, he worked in the environmental consulting industry performing environmental site assessments and wetland and endangered species surveys. He also prepared and managed environmental impact assessments, Biological assessments and technical reports for the Federal Energy Regulatory Committee (FERC). His private industry experience also included a role as the primary ecological risk assessor for US EPA hazardous waste sites in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Research Interests

Dr. Morley is interested in interdisciplinary research on ecosystem functions and services, with particular interest in wetland ecology and conservation. This includes above-ground work with biodiversity assessments, and aerial and earth observation techniques, and below- ground assessments quantifying carbon and groundwater contributions.

Teaching Interests

Terry currently teaches undergraduate Biogeography modules, advises research projects and teaches biodiversity and coastal change on the MSc in Coastal and Marine Environments programme.
He is also the co-coordinator of the Geography and Geosystems programme.
