Biography
Dr. Tenis Ranjan is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the MaREI Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine and Construct Innovate, based at the Ryan Institute, School of Engineering, University of Galway. His career reflects a distinctive integration of academic excellence and industry experience across Ireland and Sri Lanka, with a strong focus on sustainable engineering, renewable energy systems, and advanced manufacturing technologies.
Dr. Tenis Ranjan holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Galway, where his research focused on the structural integrity and performance of composite tidal turbine blades. He also earned an M.Phil. and a B.Sc. Eng. (Hons) in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering from the University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka. His research trajectory spans life-cycle assessment of composite manufacturing, structural optimisation of renewable energy devices, and the development of real-time monitoring systems and digital twin technologies for tidal and wind energy applications.
He has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications in leading international journals, including Ocean Engineering, Engineering Structures, Measurement: Sensors, and IEEE Xplore, and has presented his work at major global conferences such as the European Wave and Tidal Energy Conference and the International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. In recognition of his research impact, he was awarded Runner-Up for the Early Career Researcher Award at the MaREI Awards 2024.
In addition to his research, Dr. Tenis Ranjan brings nearly 7 years of academic experience as a Senior Lecturer and Lecturer at the University of Ruhuna, alongside roles as a Visiting Lecturer across several institutions. He has contributed extensively to curriculum development, module coordination, and programme design, and continues to support teaching at the University of Galway. His teaching portfolio spans structural dynamics, materials engineering, thermofluids, and building services, and he is actively involved in supervising postgraduate and undergraduate research projects.
His industry experience includes roles as a Mechanical Engineer and Control and Automation Engineer in leading manufacturing and engineering firms, where he developed expertise in automation, systems integration, and wastewater and building services engineering. He has successfully designed and implemented automated mechanical systems and contributed to projects, aligning closely with sustainable and low-carbon engineering practices. He has also played a key role in securing and delivering international research and education initiatives, including Erasmus+ projects focused on Net Zero skills and renewable energy capacity building. His current research involvement spans multiple large-scale projects aimed at advancing sustainable energy systems and resilient infrastructure.
Dr. Tenis Ranjan is committed to bridging academia and industry to deliver innovative, climate-resilient engineering solutions. His work aligns closely with global sustainability goals, with a particular emphasis on low-carbon technologies, smart infrastructure, and renewable energy systems.
Research Interests
Research interests are focused on structural testing, marine renewable energy, tidal and wind energy, composite materials and manufacturing, and mechanical engineering.
