Biography

Tá Tadhg Ó hIfearnáin ina Ollamh Bunaithe le Gaeilge in Ollscoil na Gaillimhe. Ba in Ollscoil Luimnigh a bhí sé ag obair roimhe agus in Ollscoil na Briotáine Uachtaraí roimhe sin arís, tar éis dó tréimhsí a chaitheamh mar thaighdeoir agus léachtóir in Ollscoil Utrecht agus in Ollscoil Uladh. Tá BA agus PhD i Léann na Gaeilge aige ó Ollscoil Uladh, Cúil Raithin.

 

Tadhg Ó hIfearnáin is Established Professor of Modern Irish in the University of Galway. He worked previously at the University of Limerick and before then at the University of Rennes 2 after periods as a lecturer and researcher at Ulster University and Utrecht University. He holds a BA and PhD in Irish from the University of Ulster at Coleraine.

Teanga agus sochaí, go háirithe teangeolaíocht agus sochtheangeolaíocht na Gaeilge agus na dteangacha Gaelacha eile; teangacha mionlaithe agus neamhfhorleathana; teanga agus saíocht na Gaeilge ón 17ú haois i leith.

Bím ag obair i réimsí gaolmhara léinn a bhaineann le teangacha agus lucht a labhartha; saothar teoiriciúil agus allamuigh bunaithe ar nósmhaireacht, dearcadh agus idé-eolaíocht teanga; beartas agus pleanáil teanga sa Ghaeltacht, anois agus tríd an stair; caighdeáin agus caighdeánú teanga; an dóigh a n-airíonn cainteoirí an t-achar teangeolaíochta agus sochtheangeolaíochta idir canúintí agus teangacha éagsúla; teoiricí sochtheangeolaíochta na coimhlinte teanga.

 

Language and society, particularly the contemporary linguistics and sociolinguistics of Irish and the other Gaelic languages; Minority language studies; Irish language and cultural production from the 17th century to present.

I work in closely related fields of study related to languages and their speakers including; field-based and theoretical approaches to societal language practices, ideologies and attitudes; contemporary and historical language policy and planning in the Gaeltacht; standard languages and standardization; speakers' perceptions of the linguistic and sociolinguistic distance between different varieties of language; sociolinguistic theories of language conflict.
