Biography

Dr. Sulyman Mansour is a Civil Engineer and Postdoctoral Researcher in the Timber Engineering Research Group at the University of Galway. He joined the University of Galway in November 2024 after completing his PhD in Structural and Earthquake Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Bari, Italy, following his Master's degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Bologna, Italy.

Dr. Mansour serves as the research staff representative on two committees at the University of Galway: the Research and Innovation (R&I) Committee at the School of Engineering, and the Internationalisation Committee at the College of Science and Engineering (CSE). He is also the International Staff Officer at the Research Staff Network (RSN) at the University of Galway. In addition, he is the laboratories coordinator for the Strength of Materials course for all engineering second year students.

Dr. Mansour is currently active in two European projects: the ForestValue 2 CRESTIMB project (focusing on circular and sustainable timber construction) and the TimberEDU teaching-related project (developing educational resources for timber engineering).

Research Interests

Dr. Mansour's current research activities are primarily focused on analytical and experimental investigations of novel sustainable building solutions using Irish homegrown timber. His work includes multi-scale testing of engineered wood products, from planning and manufacturing of specimens to experimental testing and post-processing of results.

Different experimental experiences have been accumulated previously in Italy in the field of Structural and Earthquake Engineering, where his research focused on the structural response of industrial storage structures subjected to earthquake excitations, including shaking table testing of full-scale steel silos filled with granular material at the EUCENTRE laboratory in Pavia, Italy. Moreover, he was involved in several national research projects regarding the structural health monitoring of bridges in the southern regions of Italy. His work included planning dynamic testing methodologies, including free-vibration and forced-vibration tests, using different instrumentation such as accelerometers, LVDTs, data loggers, and impact hammers.

Research Projects

  1. CRESTIMB 2024-2027: Funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine through ForestValue2 programme (Horizon Europe) in collaboration with different European and Australian Academic and industrial partners. Key points: (a) Innovative mass timber building system with moment-resisting connections with threaded rods; (b) Increasing material (timber) circularity of structural systems, design for assembly, disassembly and re-assembly; (c) Focus on long-term properties and their effects (creep).
  2. TimberEDU 2023-2026: Innovative Higher Education in Sustainable Timber Construction. A 3-year Erasmus+ project aims to strengthen teachers’ pedagogical and professional competences in sustainable timber construction through transdisciplinary, project-based learning and international collaboration.
  3. PRIN VIBRA 2023-2025: Vibrations Induced on Buildings by natural and anthropic sources for the definition of Reduction And mitigation strategies. Funded by the Italian ministry of higher education and research.
  4. ReLuis PONTI 2021-2024: A national Italian project stems from an agreement between RELUIS (Network of University Structural Engineering Laboratories in Italy) and the Italian Superior Council of Public Works, regarding the safety and health monitoring of existing bridges.
  5. PRIN S-MoSES (Smart Monitoring for Safety of Existing Structures and Infrastructures) 2022-2024: Various research activities regarding the structural monitoring of strategic buildings.
  6. SERA-SILOS European Project 2018-2020: This project included a series of shaking-table tests on a full-scale flat-bottom manufactured steel silo filled with a granular material to investigate the actions provoked by the granular solid onto the silo wall under earthquake input.
