A 1997 graduate of University College Dublin, Professor Walsh undertook his pre-registration house officer posts in Northern Ireland before three years of basic surgical training in the North-West of England. He spent a year undertaking a Master of Science degree at the University of Liverpool before commencing higher surgical training on the East of England scheme. From 2005 until 2007, he undertook clinical research at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge and the University of Cambridge, leading to the award of a Master of Surgery degree. He passed the Intercollegiate Fellowship Examination in General Surgery with a specialty interest in Vascular Surgery at the first attempt in 2009 and was appointed as Associate Professor of Surgery Consultant Vascular Surgeon at the University of Limerick in September 2010. He moved to NUI Galway in April 2014 as Professor of Vascular Surgery. He was Editor Assistant at the British Journal of Surgery in 2009 and then spent time as Assistant Editor at the International Journal of Surgery. He is currently an Editor with the Cochrane Vascular Group, responsible for diagnostic test accuracy reviews. He is a regular peer-reviewer for journals including the British Journal of Surgery, European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery and BMJ Open. Professor Walsh has published almost 200 articles, commentaries and letters in peer-reviewed journals. He has edited two books (General Surgery Outpatient Decisions, 2nd Ed, Radcliffe, 2008 and Cracking the Intercollegiate General Surgery FRCS, Taylor amp; Francis 2014) and is a contributor to the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Surgery. He has extensive experience in clinical comparative-effectiveness research both as principal investigator in clinical trials as well as leading teams undertaking systematic reviews of both test accuracy and interventions. He hasdesigned and led clinical trials, ranging from early phase 1 trials of medical devices and advanced therapeutics to multicentre clinicalintervention trials. He has received funding from the Moulton Charitable Foundation, the Health Research Board and Science Foundation Ireland. He regularly supervise surgical trainees undertaking higher degrees by research. In 2022, he became Clinical Lead for RCSIs National Surgical Research Support Centre, with a remit to improve participation in surgical trials on the island of Ireland.
