Dr Siobhan McMahon is a neuroscientist and lecturer in anatomy at University of Galway. Dr McMahon is Director of the Galway Neuroscience Centre and a founding member of the Global Neuroanatomy Network. Dr McMahon was awarded her BSc in Biology from Maynooth University in 1994. She was awarded her Ph.D. in 2000 from University College Cork where she investigated the differentiation of radial glial in the developing spinal cord. She continued her research in University College Cork as a postdoctoral research fellow investigating the lineage potential of glial cells in the developing spinal cord. In 2005 she joined the Regenerative Medicine Institute at University of Galway as a Health Research Board funded postdoctoral fellow. Her research then focused on the use of lentiviral vectors to treat injury in the central nervous system. In November 2006 she joined the Discipline of Anatomy at University of Galway as a lecturer . Her research currently involves use of stem cells, viral vectors and polymer scaffolds to promote regeneration following spinal cord injury. Dr McMahon has supervised 8 PhD students to completion and has mentored postdoctoral scientists and research assistants. She hosts MSc students, and undergraduate research students annually. Dr McMahon is actively involved in science outreach to school children and the general Public.

Dr McMahon teaches human anatomy to undergraduate students in science, medicine, nursing and health science.
