Biography

Head of Discipline (General Nursing)Postgraduate programme director: Post Graduate Diploma in Nursing (Acute Medicine).Module leader for the following postgraduate core postgraduate programme modules:Service Improvement,Leadership, Quality Improvement and Governance,Decision making, Nursing and Advanced practice professional roles.I have been a lecturer in the university for 23 years. I teach across a variety of topics across undergraduate and post graduate programmes. My research expertise is in qualitative research methods, including ethnography, narrative inquiry and discourse analysis. My research focus encompasses the following areas:Advanced nursing practice.Enhancing the quality of nurse education.Arts based pedagogy.Student and staff experiences of higher education.I was nominated for a Presidents Award for Teaching Excellence in 2009.

Current research project:Collaborative International Research Team Member: collaboration between the School of Nursing and Midwifery NUIG and M. Louise Fitzpatrick, College of Nursing, Villanova University, Philadelphia, USA:Title: Doctoral Nursing Students Attitudes Toward Institutional Review Board (IRB) Quality Improvement Committee (QIC) Processes.

Teaching Interests

As a teacher and supervisor I strive to engage students by facilitating a comfortable and engaging learning environment that is responsive to student needs. I have particular expertise in developing blended learning curricula, clinical skills teaching and clinical simulation. I use poetry in my reflective practice teaching as a means of connecting with the students and have published on this creative pedagogy.
