He had his MD and awarded his FRCS in Dublin 1995. He had a pectoral fellowship from Arizona Heart Institute in 1997, followed by a Diploma in Endovascular Surgery from University of Paris XII in 1998. He joined the vascular team at St Jamess hospital and Trinity College Dublin and contributed to the development of the Endovascular surgery programme.He achieved his Intercollegiate FRCS in vascular surgery in March 2001 in London and has been certified with European Board of Vascular Surgery in September 2001 in Lucerne Switzerland, earning him the Top score and the First Irish to be confirmed with European Vascular Board. Prof Sultan settled down in Galway in 2001 to focus exclusively on vascular and endovascular surgery delivery and development of the vascular services.Prof Sultan is clinical vascular lead for Soalta Hospital group of the National Health Service Executive. This hospital group comprises seven hospitals and cares for a population of approximately 800,000 people. Prof Sultan heads a team of dedicated vascular and endovascular specialists focus on prevention of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. He specialises in stroke prevention with one day surgery for carotid artery intervention; endovascular, open and hybrid management of thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysm and dissection. lower limb revascularisation for which he has pioneered techniques for complexaortic interventions and salvage limbs with critical ischaemia and wound care management for refractory chronic venous ulcers with hyperbaric medicine. In addition, he performs keyhole surgery for varicose veins as a six-hour outpatient admission.With state-of-the-art technology, vascular laboratory, veins unit, diagnostic and interventional capabilities, comprehensive research programs, and on-going educational opportunities, he delivers the highest level of care to meet the needs of his vascular patients. He had established the first vascular genetic clinic in Ireland and initiated the program of buccal genetic screening for Vascular connective tissue disorders.Prof Sultan leads a world-class research team of PhD students, post-doctural researchers and fellows at the Western Vascular Institute, National University of Ireland Galway and Galway Mayo Institute of technology. He has secured millions in research funding including grants from the European Commission, Irish Research Council, Health Research Board, Science Foundation Ireland and industry. He has a prolific research portfolio with over 400 international peer-reviewed Public - No restrictionations, 500 international presentations, and 250 national presentations. His prolific research portfolio has been recognised by 34 international awards. National Institute of Health in the USA cited his seminal Public - No restrictionation on the cost-effectiveness of endovascular aortic repair as one of the most ground-breaking Public - No restrictionations in this field in the last decade.In 2002 Prof Sultan founded the Western Vascular Institute, a charitable research foundation committed to vascular research, technical innovation, professional and Public - No restriction education. He was elected as the chairman. In 2007, he established the endovascular masters programme in collaboration with National University of Ireland Galway. He has long championed the need for translational research and has been the first to launch many of new medical devices in Europe and worldwide.Prof Sultan is a talented inventor and has 19 patents in his name. In 2007, he was Inter-Trade Irelands Equity Network winner of the Best International Emerging Company in the All-Island Seedcorn Business Competition. He received, in 2013, the Cleveland Clinic Enterprise Ireland Clinical Innovation award for his stem cell delivery catheter design. He was awarded the prestigious commercialisation fund by Enterprise Ireland in 2016 to develop an innovative endovascular arterial stroke prevention device at NUI Galway.Prof Sultan is the president of the International society for vascular surgery, ISVS Dean of the International Endovascular fellowship. He is a distinguished Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and President of the American Society of Angiology, Irish chapter. He is a fellow of society of vascular surgery, international society of vascular surgeons , member of association of vascular surgeon of Great Britain and Ireland and European Society of vascular and Endovascular Surgery. Prof Sherif Sultan was awarded his PhD from Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu in Romania for his excellence in generating leading-edge, innovative novel approaches for complex cardiovascular pathologies.
