Personal profile

Biography

Professor Seán Leen is Established Chair of Mechanical Engineering at University Galway since 2008. He is a member of the Ryan Institute for Environment, Marine and Energy. Sean is an SFI-funded Principal Investigator (PI) in the I-Form Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre and has been PI on numerous other collaborative research projects funded by SFI, IRC, EPSRC etc. He was previously Associate Professor and Reader in Mechanical Engineering at University of Nottingham, where he completed his PhD with Professor Tom Hyde in 1999, and was a funded investigator within the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centres for Advanced Gas Turbine Transmissions and Advanced Manufacture. Prior to that, he worked in engineering consultancy on dynamic analysis and design of marine structures. Seans research interests include computational and experimental solid mechanics, with particular application to structural integrity, especially fatigue, fretting fatigue, wear, fracture, plasticity, contact mechanics, and effects of manufacturing processes (e.g. welding, additive) on mechanical behaviour and structural integrity. His fatigue research interests focus on cyclic plasticity and visco-plasticity, fatigue failure and life prediction, low-cycle fatigue, multiaxial fatigue, fretting fatigue, micromechanics of fatigue (crystal plasticity) and thermo-mechanical fatigue. Industrial applications include renewable energy, power generation, aerospace, biomedical and offshore. Seán has a strong track record of collaboration with industrial partners in UK, Ireland and has developed numerous international collaborations, including China, UK, EU.
