Biography

Dr Rosemary Geoghegan is currently Director of the Medical Programme in the School of Medicine, University of Galway. She has responsibility for leading excellence in delivery, assessment and evaluation of the medical programme. She is Programme lead of the Medical Programme Curriculum Renewal Project, a whole programme quality improvement project, commenced in academic year 202122. From a General Practice clinical background, she has worked in an academic and clinical capacity in Paediatrics, notably in Paediatric Diabetes. She maintains a one day weekly commitment to Paediatric Diabetes in Galway University Hospital, in a patient-centred, inter-professional team, immersed in diabetes technology use. Academic leadership: She has extensive academic leadership experience. As Vice -Dean for Teaching and Learning at the College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, NUI Galway (2016-2020) she led development and delivery ofthe National, University and College Strategic Plan for Teaching, Learning and Assessment in the College. Projectsshe successfully ledinclude role out of blended learning tools in undergraduate and postgraduate healthcare education; development of graduate attribute (GA) for medical programme and embedding simulation into an undergraduate medical programme to support GA attainment .In her role creating and supporting a positive learning environment for medical students she has worked as academy academic liaison officer.Her current External Examiner appointment (Preparedness for professional Practice) is at the University College Cork, Ireland. She has a Masters Degree in Clinical Education and professional membership of AMEE (Association for Medical Education in Europe), INHED (Irish Network of Healthcare Educators) and ICGP (Irish College of General Practitioners). Student education: With extensive experience teachingin both undergraduate and post graduate taught programmes she is module lead in the Advanced Clinical Skills and Professional Development module in the Medical Programme. She additional leads the Chronic Disorder module in M Sc in Adolescent Health (University of Galway) and co-leads the curriculum design and assessment modules in M Sc in Clinical Education (Universtiy of Galway) . She supervises student projects at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Research Interests

Rosemarys primary research interestis in the field of medical education, in particular in the area oflearning in the clinical environment and clinical assessment. The focus of her Masters inMedical Education was on perceptions of stakeholders on shared clinical learningplacements.She supervises research theses on the University GalwayMasters in Clinical Education and the Masters in Preventive Cardiology programmes.Rosemary, in collaboration with the AdultDiabetesResearch Team, Galway University Hospital,has also published in the area of Paediatric Diabetes.

Teaching Interests

Clinical Education including case based learning, reflection on practice, situational learning, inter-professional learning andassessment for learning.
