Bhain an tOllamh Ní Fhrighil céim chéadonóracha amach sa Ghearmáinis agus sa Ghaeilge in Ollscoil na Gaillimhe; céim MPhil sa Teangeolaíocht Fheidhmeach i gColáiste na Tríonóide agus céim PhD saNua-Ghaeilge in Ollscoil na Gaillimhe. Bronnadh Duais Theach an Ardmhéara uirthi as a céim sa Ghaeilge in 1998 agus ghnóthaigh sí Scoláireacht Rialtas na hÉireann le tabhairt faoin a taighde dochtúireachta (1998-2001). Bhí sí ina léachtóir Gaeilge i gColáiste Phádraig, Droim Conrach, sna blianta 2002-2013. Bhronn Foras Feasa (Ollscoil na hÉireann, Má Nuad) comhaltacht taighde uirthi in 2008. Sa tréimhse 2014-2016, bhí sí ina príomhthaighdeoir Gaeilge ar an mhórthionscnamh taighde The Representation of Jews in Irish Literature, tionscnamh a mhaoinigh an Chomhairle um Thaighde sna hEalaíona agus sna Daonnachtaí, an Ríocht Aontaithe (AHRC).

Professor Rióna Ní Fhrighil is Principal Investigator of the research project Republic of Conscience: Human Rights and Irish Poetry. This research project is funded by an Irish Research Council Laureate Award. Prof. Ní Fhrighil is a graduate of University of Galway and Trinity College Dublin. She holds a joint first-class honours BA (International) degree in German and Irish, MPhil in Applied Linguistics (TCD), and PhD in Modern Irish. She was awarded the Mansion House Prize for Irish (1998) and a Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship (1998-2001). Her doctoral research was a comparative study of the poetry of Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill and Eavan Boland. Rióna was a lecturer in St. Patricks College, Drumcondra, (DCU) for 11 years before being appointed to University of Galway in 2013. She was a Foras Feasa Research Fellow in 2008. For the period 2014-2016, she was the Principal Irish-language Researcher on the AHRC-funded project The Representation of Jews in Irish Literature.

My main teaching interests include

  • applied linguistics
  • ecocriticism

I also have an interest in computer assisted language learning and I have played a major role in the development and implementation of the new Irish-language syllabus for third level (2008-2012).
