PhD projects

My research interests are in linear algebra and its interactions with such areas as combinatorics, representation theory, field theory, and finite group theory. Details available on my website www.maths.nuigalway.ie~rquinlan. I am also interested in mathematics education research at university level. I would welcome applications in either of these areas.

Personal profile

Biography

I have been a lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Galway since 2005. I hold a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Alberta (2000) and a BSc and MSc from University College Galway. My research interests are generally in algebra, specifically in combinatorial and algebraic aspects of matrix theory. I am also interested in art as a means of mathematical exploration and expression, and generally in connections between mathematics and the arts. I am the current president of the Irish Mathematical Society (2025 and 2026).

Teaching Interests

All areas of mathematics at all levels from first year undergraduate to PhD. MOdules that I am teaching in the current year are listed below. Since moving to NUI Galway in 2005 I have taught a wide range of mathematical topics to students of Science, Arts and Engineering as well as to specialists in Mathematics. I have also taught our first year course through the Irish language on several occasions. Lecture notes from most of my modules can be found at here.
