Biography
Dr. Pilar Luz Rodrigues is a Postdoctoral Researcher and Lecturer at the Centre for Global Women's Students in the School of Political Science and Sociology at the University of Galway.
Previously, she was a Postdoctoral Researcher in the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures of the University of Galway, where she worked on the Irish Research Council funded VICO Project (Rural Villages, Migration and Intercultural Communication).
She has also worked as a Research Assistant at the South East Technological University (SETU), working with the Dean of the School of Humanities on social and health related research projects, including a project funded by the Irish Cancer Society. Between 2017 and 2023, she taught a range of courses within the School of Humanities at SETU. In addition, Dr. Rodrigues has research experience at international organizations, such as the International Organization for Migration (IOM - UN Migration), and NGOs, including the Irish Council for International Students (ICOS).
Dr. Rodrigues concluded her PhD in Sociology in 2023, under the SETU President's Scholarship. Her doctoral thesis, titled "Mitigating the Effects of Precarity: Brazilian Migrant Workers and Place-Making in Rural Ireland", was based on a year and a half of fieldwork with Brazilian migrant workers in rural Ireland, particularly in Gort, known as "Ireland's Little Brazil".
Dr. Rodrigues is the current co-convenor of the Race and Ethnicity Study Group of the Sociological Association of Ireland (SAI), and a member of the Sociology of Migration Research Network of the European Sociological Association (ESA), and of the HIDDEN (History of Identity Documentation in European Nations) COST Action Network.
Research Interests
Her research interests include more broadly migration, social policy, racial equality, and cultural diversity. She is particularly interested in Brazilian migration and diaspora, as well as rural migration.
