Significant Career Details and Achievements
2024-Present: University of Galway. Emeritus Professor
2004-2015: Enerit Ltd, Ireland. Founder, Principal Consultant & CEO
- Enerit: development of ISO 50001 energy software for medium and large energy users in a world market - targeting multinational companies and consultants.
- Since 2009, I focussed on leading the programme of strategic (commercial and technical) development of the ISO 50001 software. Example installations at: Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Fiat (Comau), Boston Scientific, Nuqul, Sage; and large buildings like Rome and Milan Airports, Rotunda Hospital and Asia Development Bank). Projects delivered globally - Europe, Americas, MENA and Asia.
- Until 2009, I led nationally strategic energy consulting projects relating to new ISO standards and EU Directives in energy. Major consulting projects include:
- Strategic consulting to SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland) on national rollout of the EPBD (European Performance of Buildings Directive);
- Requirement specification and testing of the Building Energy Labelling software (DEAP), recently rolled out nationally in Ireland, for SEAI;
- Energy management consultancy (ISO 50001) for large industrial companies in healthcare, food production and metal processing (e.g. Allergan, Abbott, Baxter, Boston Scientific & Aughinish Alumina) who piloted the new standard;
1996–2016: QSET Ltd., Founder (CEO 2000-2004), Galway, Ireland and Boston, USA
- QSET focused on environmental compliance and quality management software for multinational companies - moved to Boston for 4 years (from 2000) to establish in USA.
- From a zero base, QSET launched the initial product in 1996 and a Web-based product in 2001. The software has been used in more than 20 countries in sectors such as medical devices, aerospace, power, electronics, food & drink, chemicals and paper by e.g. Philips, Alcatel Lucent, Henkel Aerospace, Heineken, Arjo Wiggins, Irish Aviation Authority, National Nuclear Lab, ABB Alstom Power and DHL. Primary markets: USA, Mexico, UK, France, Netherlands and Ireland.
1981-2000: National University of Ireland (NUI), Galway, IRELAND
- Personal Professor (1993-2000) and Statutory Lecturer (1981-93) in Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer at the Mechanical Engineering Department (NB: part-time from 1996-2000).
- Modelling and experimental research in thermodynamics and heat/mass transfer applied to solar energy, heat pumps, building system simulation, manufacturing processes, industrial energy analysis, frosting, energy storage and boiler & engine heat exchangers.
- Founded and built the Computer-Aided Thermal Engineering Research Group (CATERU) from a zero base into an internationally recognised research group comprising 10-15 specialists and, at a time when research funding was extremely limited in Ireland, competitively won $3,000,000 of research contracts from European Community research, development and demonstration programmes such as DELTA, JOULE, BRITE/EURAM and THERMIE and Ireland's Strategic and HEIC Research Programmes.
- These contracts involved cooperative R&D with companies such as Dornier (D), Casa (E), PCD (A), Dassault (F), Sulzer (CH) and Philips (NL). CATERU has also worked cooperatively with universities and research institutes such as: BRE (UK), CSTB (F), TNO and Technical University Delft (NL), Fraunhofer Institute (D), VTT (SF), FIB (DK), ETH and Univ. of Lausanne (CH) and Univ. of Liege (B).
- Published almost 40 papers in academic journals; published almost 30 papers in conference proceedings; co-authored almost 40 national/international research reports.
- Consultancy for British Gas, Puritan Bennett, Digital, GEC, Alcan, Perstorp and CRH in heat exchangers, ventilators, boilers, manufacturing and energy system innovation.
- Initiated and taught the 5 courses from 1st Year through graduate school in Heat Transfer & Thermodynamics.
- 4 PhD and 12 M. Eng Sc. students graduated under my supervision.
Contribution(s) to National and International Bodies
- Appointed as referee, Editorial Board member or session chair for 14 different journals and conferences worldwide including Journal of Solar Energy, International Journal of Experimental Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, Journal of Solar Energy Engineering, International Journal of Energy, Environment, Economics, European Thermal Sciences Conf., ASME/ISES/KSES/JSME International Solar Energy Confs, World Renewable Energy Congress.
- National Representative on setting European Standards on CEN TC 89 Working Groups 4 and 6 representing NSAI - standards for models for energy calculations for buildings.
- National Representative for the EU's Heat Pump Supporting Group.
- External Examiner for Trinity College, Dublin in Mechanical Eng. & Computer Science.
- Member of interview panels for Engineers Ireland (C.Eng.) and UCD & UCC.
- Chairman of the EUROBUILD Association (construction industry training, with special responsibility for I.T. and energy), headquartered in SWEDEN and Director of the CALENER Consortium (energy training) which had its central office in FRANCE.
- In 1988, I was one of four European delegates in alternative energy sent to the EC-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation, JAPAN, for 3 weeks study tour.
Notable Features
- Winner: American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Solar Energy Division Award for "Best Paper in Testing and Measurement, 1987/88".
- Patent: Short-term Patent, Application Ref. No. S930900 (with Wood, J., Vaughan, M., Ahern, J.M., Costelloe, C.J., Conneely, T.) Heat Exchanger for Condensing Gas Boiler.
- Wrote “Frosting” section for International Encyclopaedia of Heat & Mass Transfer (1997).
