Personal Webpage...a target=_blank rel=nofollow href=https:www.pmgarrettdsw.comhttps:www.pmgarrettdsw.com Paul Michael Garrett is an educator and writer who has been described by the International Journal of Social Welfare , as probably the most important critical social work theorist in the English-speaking world. His most recent book is Dissenting Social Work: Critical Theory, Resistance and Pandemic (Routledge, 2021). Praised by reviewers for its `passion and erudition, the book maps a more socially progressive direction for social work in the context of issues related to forced migration, the threat of neo-fascism, surveillance culture, neo-colonialism, the Black Lives Matter movement and the COVID-19 pandemic. Co-authored with the anti-racist activist Washington Marovatsanga, his next book is Social Work with the Black African Diaspora (Bristol University, 2022). Paul is the author of ten books and over a 100 peer reviewed articles and his standing has been internationally recognised. He was a Visiting Professor in Residence at the City University of New York (CUNY) in 2018 and, after his Social Work and Social Theory book was translated into Chinese, he was a Visiting Professor and keynote conference speaker at East China University of Science and Technology in Shanghai. Over two decades, Pauls corpus of work has developed highly distinctive and innovative lines of theoretical inquiry. As early as the 1990s, he was one of the first Irish scholars to investigate how the state responded to unmarried mothers.. More generally, his incisive commentaries on neoliberal capitalism and social work have become benchmarks for other educators in the global social work and social policy arenas. Furthermore, his writing includes investigations of key critical social theorists (such as Bourdieu, Gramsci, Fanon, Arendt and Ranciere). For several years, has also been a member of the editorial collective of Critical Social Policy . Grounded in socialist, feminist, anti-racist and radical perspectives, the journal is focused on the experiences of people struggling within or against the dispersed domains of the neoliberal state. A member of the prestigious Royal Irish Academy, Paul has also been awarded a D.Litt. (Higher Doctorate) by the National University of Ireland. He has worked as a Lecturer at NUI Galway since 2004 and, before this, he was based at the University of Nottingham. He is a registered social worker and was at the forefront in creating the MA in Social Work in NUI Galway. For a number of years, he was the Director of this highly regarded course and he led the team that achieved the initial accreditation for the programme from the professions regulatory agency, CORU
Research Interests
Pauls significant interventions, in a range of debates on social work and social policy, have appeared in international peer reviewed journals across a range of disciplines. For example, initially published over twenty years ago, his work on responses to unmarried mothers in the RePublic - No restriction of Ireland helped to open up this topic as an area for future research. He is the author of seven single-authored books. The latest of these IsDissenting Social Work: Critical Theory, Resistance and Pandemic published by Routledge in 2021. Other books includeWelfare Words: Critical Social Work amp; Social Policy published by SAGE in 2018. One reviewer maintains that it is a fascinating and rich book, which documents the central place of language in the (re)production of social order and the importance of welfare words in delineating the parameters of our collective imagination. PaulsSocial Work and Social Theory (Policy Press, 2013), subsequentlypublished in Chinese translation, was published as an expanded second edition in2018.He has also written three volumes mapping facets of social work with children and families during the period of New Labour in the UK (1997-2010). Approximately, 100 of his articles have appeared in international peer reviewed journals.
