Biography

Dr Orla Mongan is the Lecturer in Intern Education in NUI Galway and the West North West Intern Network. A graduate of National University of Ireland, Galway in 2001, Dr Mongan gained membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in 2004; she subsequently completed vocational training in General Practice in the UK, was awarded a Diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2007 and gained membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 2010. Dr Mongan developed her interest in medical education from an early stage in her career working as a Lecturer in Medicine in NUIG from 2005-2007. During this time she was awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Education.Orla haslived in the UK, Australia, U.S.A and Ireland and has worked inhospital medicine, General Practice, Occupational Health and held lecturing posts in UCD, RCSI and NUIG. She has worked in her current role since 2015 and works closely with the HSE and other stakeholders to develop and deliver training appropriate to the needs of interns. She is currently developing a National Intern Curriculum as part of a working group. In 2018, Orla completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Quality Improvement and Leadership with the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland and has since introduced QI training for interns. She is a member of many committees and groups both locally and nationally including the National Intern Curriculum Working Group, Intern Network Executive, Student Affairs Committee NUIG, GUH Transfer of Tasks Committee, National Health Fusion Team Challenge Committee. Over the last few years, Dr Mongan has been instrumental in promoting Interprofessional Learning in NUIG and Saolta and through her work with the multidisciplinary group in GUH she has successfully piloted a Special Study Module in Interprofessional Learning for 4th year medical students andintroduced the inaugural Saolta Health Fusion Team Challenge. Dr Mongan is involved in educational research and is currently investigating doctors preparedness for caring for patients with low English proficiency as part of a thesis for aMasters in Healthcare Simulation and Patient Safety.
