Biography

Oksana Dereza is a Digital Library Developer at the University of Galway, where she is responsible for creating and maintaining digital library systems that organise, preserve, and provide access to institutional research outputs and digital resources. She is also pursuing a PhD at the Insight SFI Centre for Data Analytics / University of Galway, focusing on Natural Language Processing for historical and low-resource languages. Oksana holds a Master’s degree in Computational Linguistics from the Higher School of Economics (2017) and a Specialist’s (joint BA + MA) degree in Celtic Studies from Lomonosov Moscow State University (2015). 

Oksana has contributed to multiple research initiatives and has published extensively. Her work bridges the fields of NLP, data science and Celtic studies, advancing technologies for the digitisation and analysis of cultural heritage materials with a particular focus on the Irish language. At the University of Galway, she played a key role in the "An Gaodhal" project, working on Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Named Entity Recognition (NER) for a 19th-century bilingual Irish-English newspaper. 

In addition to her research, Oksana has a strong background in teaching. She designed and delivered courses in NLP, Digital Humanities, Python programming, and Irish language and literature in Moscow State University and Higher School of Economics.
