Biography
Ms. Niamh Cahill is a Research Associate in the Discipline of Bacteriology, and a member of the Antimicrobial Resistance and Microbial Ecology (ARME) Research Group and the Centre for One Health. Niamh completed a BSc (Hons) in Midwifery in 2015 (University of Limerick), and a MSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science in 2017 (University of Galway).
Since joining the ARME group in 2017, Niamh has worked closely with both national and international partners on projects addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) across environmental, food, and animal systems, applying a One Health approach.

Hospital Effluent as a Source of Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacterales
MSc project (Discipline of Bacteriology) examining hospital wastewater as a reservoir for antimicrobial resistance.

MedVetKlebs (One Health EJP-funded project)
Contributed to a study on the transmission and epidemiology of antimicrobial-resistant Klebsiella across human, animal, and environmental interfaces.

AREST (EPA and HSE-funded project)
Contributed to a national study which provided evidence of the extent of contamination of the Irish environment with antimicrobial-resistant organisms and antimicrobial resistance genes of clinical concern, and identifed key sources, hotspots, and drivers across human and agricultural sectors.

AMR and the Environment Research Gap Analysis (EPA-funded)
Conducted a comprehensive review of research on the occurrence, risk, fate, and transport of antimicrobial residues and resistance to and within the environment, supporting Ireland’s second One Health Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (2021–2025).

Pilot Study on AMR Monitoring in European Surface Waters (EPA funded)
Contributed Irish data to a European initiative assessing the feasibility of harmonised AMR monitoring in European surface waters.

Current Project: BlueAdapt (Horizon Europe-funded)
Investigating the impacts of climate change on human health risks from pathogens and antimicrobial resistant bacteria in coastal waters.
