Personal profile

Biography

Dr Michael Martyn is an Assistant Professor in Physics at the University of Galway and Academic Director of the CAMPEP-accredited MSc in Medical Physics. He earned his BSc (Hons) in Physics with Medical Physics (2011), MSc in Medical Physics (2012), and PhD in Physics (2018) from the University of Galway. His doctoral research focused on the applications of ultrasound imaging in radiotherapy, particularly in the treatment of prostate cancer, and on quantifying dosimetric effects using Monte Carlo techniques.

Michael has held clinical and research roles across Ireland, including Clinical Medical Physicist at University Hospital Galway within the radiotherapy physics team (2018-2020), Research Medical Physicist at Blackrock Health Galway Clinic contributing to the Horizon 2020-funded ORIGIN project (2020-2023), and Senior Clinical Medical Physicist within the University Limerick Hospital Group, working in diagnostic imaging and radiation protection (2023).

He is a professional member of the Irish Association of Physicists in Medicine.
