Biography

Michael Lang is a Professor in Business Information Systems in the J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics at the University of Galway, where he has worked since 1996. Prior to joining academia, he spent a number years in industry as a business systems analyst.

Prof. Lang is a first-class honours graduate of University College Dublin (Bachelor of Commerce) and the University of Galway (Postgraduate Diploma in Systems Analysis; M.Sc. in Applied Computing). He was awarded his Ph.D. by the University of Limerick and holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching & Learning in Higher Education from the University of Galway.

His research and teaching interests span information systems education; information systems security and privacy; database technologies and analytics; and business systems analysis and design.

Prof. Lang has published over 160 research outputs, including articles in leading international journals such as Journal of University Teaching and Learning Practice, Innovations in Education and Teaching International, Journal of Information Systems Education, ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction, Internet Research, Journal of Cybersecurity, ACM Digital Threats: Research & Practice, Information and Computer Security, Information Systems Management, Communications of the AIS, Information and Software Technology, Requirements Engineering, IEEE Software, and IEEE Multimedia.

He has presented his work at many prestigious international conferences, including the European Conference on Information Systems, the International Conference on Information Systems, the International Conference on Information Systems Development, and conferences of IFIP TC-8, IFIP TC-11, AIS SIGED, AIS SIGSEC, and AIS SIGSAND.

Prof. Lang serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of Information Systems Education, the premier international journal dedicated to research and practice in information systems education. He is a member of the Executive Steering Committee of the International Conference on Information Systems Development and previously served as European Coordinator of the AIS Special Interest Group on Systems Analysis & Design (SIGSAND). He is currently active in the AIS Special Interest Group on Education (SIGED) and the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education (SIGCSE).

He has received multiple nominations and awards for teaching excellence, including three President’s Awards for Teaching Excellence, and has won several best paper awards at international conferences.

Prof. Lang has secured over €1.5 million in research and pedagogical development funding from external sources, including the Irish Research Council, Higher Education Authority, EU Erasmus Programme, Enterprise Ireland, Science Foundation Ireland, the Irish Development Authority, the Northern and Western Regional Assembly, the UAE Institute for Social and Economic Research, and private organisations.
