Biography
Dr. Galal is a Postdoctoral researcher in Civil Engineering at the University of Galway, Ireland. He obtained his PhD in Civil Engineering from the same university in 2023. With extensive knowledge of experience, Dr. Galal specializes in utilizing machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), and data science approaches to develop water quality models. His current research focuses on marine, transitional, and coastal water quality, as well as their associated ecosystems. Dr. Galal is the developer of the Irish Water Quality Index (IEWQI) model and Assessment Trophic Status Index (ATSI), which specifically targets coastal and transitional water quality assessments. His expertise lies in integrating biological, physical, and chemical big data into modeling frameworks. He is particularly interested in establishing methods to model organismal and systemic networks within marine ecosystems, ranging from microbiomes to large animals and megafauna, while also integrating these models with marine environmental big data. Additionally, he has a keen interest in studying hydroclimatic events and their impacts on marine ecosystems. Throughout his academic and professional career, He has published over 30 scientific papers, numerous technical reports, and has served as a journal editor and reviewer. He has been a lead research investigator in the EcoHydroInformatics Research Group (EHIRG) and has contributed to major international and national projects. Dr. Galal has collaborated with world-class research institutes and international enterprises, and is an active member of several international professional organizations. With his extensive experience and expertise in marine water quality modeling and research, Dr. Galal brings a strong foundation of knowledge to address fundamental questions in marine science and develop innovative technologies for marine systems.
Research Interests
Dr Galal research interests revolve around advancing our understanding of water quality and its impact on ecosystems. Specifically, his aim to:1) Develop novel water quality index models using machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms for assessing and monitoring water quality in marine, transitional, and coastal environments.2) Utilize big data analysis techniques to improve our understanding of water quality dynamics and to predict and prevent environmental problems.3) Investigate the impact of climate change on water quality and develop sustainable management strategies to ensure the protection and conservation of our water resources.4) Remote sensing techniques and their applications for modelling marine waters and ecosystems.5) Develop innovative solutions for wastewater treatment and reuse, utilizing the latest advances in technology and data science approaches.6) Develope new methodologies using MLAI intregating with data science approaches in environmental modelling and management, addressing key challenges, and fostering sustainable practices.7) Collaborate with researchers, industry partners, and community organizations to ensure that our research is interdisciplinary, impactful, and relevant to society. Moreover, Dr Galal has the ability to respond quickly to sudden environmental events is critical for minimizing their impact and ensuring the safety of communities and ecosystems. To this end, his research program aims to develop flexible research plans that can be adapted to address real-time situations as they arise. Specifically, his objectives are to:i) Develop a framework for quickly identifying and assessing sudden environmental events, such as oil spills or harmful algal blooms.ii) Design research plans that can be rapidly implemented in response to these events, utilizing the latest data science and environmental monitoring technologies.III) Investigate the effectiveness of these research plans for mitigating the impact of sudden environmental events and providing actionable information for decision-makers.iv) Continuously evaluate and refine these research plans based on feedback from stakeholders, new technological advancements, and changes in environmental policy.By developing flexible research plans that can be quickly adapted to real-time situations, Dr Galal research program aims to provide critical support for environmental emergency response efforts. Ultimately, the goal of his research is to help minimize the impact of sudden environmental events and ensure the long-term health and sustainability of our ecosystems and communities.
Teaching Interests
Dr. Galal is actively involved in teaching various postgraduate modules related to surface water and modeling, remote sensing techniques for water quality modeling, aquatic ecosystems and modelling, and water resources management. These modules incorporate state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, integrating data science approaches. Dr. Galals teaching focuses on equipping students with the knowledge and skills to apply cutting-edge methodologies in these areas.
