Biography
I graduated from NUIGalway Medical School in 1986. My post graduate training was in Ireland, UK and USA (University of Iowa). My post-graduate qualifications are MD, MRCP and FRCPath. I was appointed Professor of Bacteriology NUIGalway and Consultant Microbiologist Galway University Hospitals in 1999. I have contributed to a number of national and international guidance and policy documents relating in particular to my research areas of antimicrobial resistance, food borne infection and One Health. I am Director of a number of National Reference Laboratory Services (Salmonella, Shigella, Listeria monocytogenes and Carbapenemase Producing Enterobacterales). From May 2017-April 2022 I was the Health Service National Clinical Lead for Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control. I am currently Chair of the Scientific Committee of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland and a member of the Board of the FSAI.
