Associate Professor in Physics at the University of Galway.
BSc in Experimental Physics in University College Dublin in 1987. Harvard-Smithsonian pre-doctoral fellow 1988-90. Awarded PhD from UCD in 1991. In 1992 joined the Physics staff at University of Galway, appointed College Lecturer in 1996 and Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in 2009. Elected as a Fellow Institute of Physics in 2010. Head of the School of Physics from 2009-13. President's Teaching Award 2013-14. Union of Students in Ireland/National Forum for Teaching & Learning Teaching Hero 2014 and 2020. Chair of the Institute of Physics in Ireland 2015-17. Visiting Scientist at the Whipple Observatory in Arizona on regular occasions over the last three decades. Member of the VERITAS gamma-ray astronomy collaboration.
Main research interest is in gamma-ray astronomy. Member of the VERITAS Collaboration which operates an array of four atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes at the Whipple Observatory in Arizona. Member of the UG Centre for Astronomy , the Astronomical Society of Ireland and International Astronomical Union.

Was also also interested in industrial applications of computational physics, including radiation processing.
Have taught a wide range of physics courses over three decades. Old fashioned, love overhead projectors and at least some rote learning. Also like Jupyter notebooks, Webwork and vevox.
