Biography
Marine Berthiot (BA, MA Paris-IV Sorbonne, DPhil Edinburgh) is an MSCA Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Galway. Taking a transnational and intercultural approach, her research deals with Magdalene cultural production and restorative justice in six Anglophone countries: Ireland, the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, Australia, and Aotearoa New Zealand. She is the organiser of the seminar series, Magdalene Trauma, welcoming scholars, activists, survivors, and artists from all around the world to present their work on the impact of Magdalenism.
Prior to her job at the University of Galway, Marine Berthiot was an educator and a tutor in vocational formations. After completing her PhD at the University of Edinburgh, she worked as a teaching fellow in environmental humanities at the University of Lyon then at the University of Lorraine (2023-2025). As a researcher, she has been associated with the "Lettres et Civilisations Etrangères" (LCE) Research Laboratory at Lumière Lyon 2 University since 2023, specialising in memory studies. She is a member of the editorial team of the academic journal, Textures.
Her research interests are: science and literature, trauma studies, childhood and gender studies, Pacific literatures, settler colonial arts, and ecopoetry.
Her monograph, Women Writing Girlhood Trauma in Aotearoa New Zealand, will be published by Lexington Books in 2026.
