Biography
Marie Mahon is Professor in Human Geography. Her research focuses on social and economic change and development of the rural. She is currently University of Galway PI of the Horizon Europe SERIGO Project (Social Economy for Resilience, Inclusion and Good life in Rural areas). She is a team member of the Horizon Europe FLIARA (Female Led Innovations in Agriculture and Rural Areas) and PREMIER (Preparing multi-actor projects in a co-creative way) Projects. She is also team member of the CO-BIOECON project (Co-Designed Regional Strategy for the Bioeconomy) funded through the Department of Agriculture and Food. More recently, she was Galway PI of the Horizon 2020 IMAJINE project (Integrated Mechanisms for Addressing Spatial Justice and Territorial Inequalities in Europe (2017-2022), and Irish PI of the ESRCIRC Networking Project: Civil Society in Turbulent Times. Marie has published on issues of spatial justice in the rural, urban-rural place and community development including civic engagement and governance, place-based identity and representations of rurality. She has also published on the governance of spatial planning and on the role of the arts and culture in rural sustainability.
Research Interests
Social and economic change in the rural. Changing perceptions of rurality. The role of arts and culture in rural sustainability. Participatory democracy, rural citizenship and civic engagement. Issues of spatial justice in the rural.
