Personal profile

Biography

Dr. Marie Coggins is a Senior Lecturer in Exposure Science at the School of Natural Sciences, University of Galway, based in the Physics department. She is also a member of the University of Galway Centre for One Health at the Ryan Institute and of Construct Innovate – Ireland’s Construction Technology Centre.

Dr. Coggins was awarded a PhD in Atmospheric Physics from NUI Galway in 2000. From 2000 to 2003, she worked in industry as an Industrial Hygiene Professional before joining the University of Galway in 2003 as a lecturer.

From 2009 to 2019, she served as Programme Director for the university's multidisciplinary postgraduate programmes in Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety. She currently holds the role of Programme Director for the BSc in Occupational Health and Safety Management.

Dr. Coggins leads the Exposure Science Research Group and has authored over 80 peer-reviewed journal articles, reports, and conference papers in the field of occupational and environmental exposure science. She has supervised more than 50 PhD and MSc students and has served as Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI on approximately 15 research projects. Her research focuses on human exposure to chemical pollutants, particularly through occupational and environmental pathways. She has a particular interest in human exposure to indoor air pollutants in residential settings.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Coggins was invited to join the National Expert Group on the Role of Ventilation in Reducing Transmission of COVID-19, initially established as a subgroup of the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) and later reporting directly to the Government Senior Officials Group.

Since 2000, she has represented Ireland as a board member of the International Energy Agency’s Technology Collaboration Programme – Annex 5, within the Air Infiltration and Ventilation Centre (AIVC). She is a Steering Committee member of Healthy Homes Ireland.

In 2024, Dr. Coggins was awarded Chartered Fellowship of the Faculty of the British Occupational Hygiene Society (CFFOH) — the highest distinction awarded by the Faculty — in recognition of her significant contributions to occupational hygiene and worker health protection.
