Biography
Máiréad Ní Chróinín is an artist and researcher, based in Galway. She is Co-Director of the bilingual company Moonfish Theatre, and also has an individual practice as a digital theatre maker. Máiréad received her PhD from University of Galway; her research focused on the development of a design methodology for the creation of digitally-enabled performances that tap intoaudience members sensory, embodied experiences in ways that engender empathy and critical reflection.In her individual practice Máiréad has worked with, and studied the use of, body-centric technologies, particularly mobile technologies, to create immersive and interactive works that place the audience member at the centre of the experience. She has presented work in Dublin Fringe Festival, Galway Theatre Festival and Galway Early Music Festival. In 2018 she took part in the SPACE residency at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, hosted by Performance Corporation, which focused on intersections between VR and AR design and theatre practice. Máiréad has published on her work in journals such as the International Journal of Performance Arts and Digital Media and Research in Drama Education (RiDE): The Journal of Applied Theatre and Performance . a target=_blank rel=nofollow href=http:www.maireadnichroinin.comwww.maireadnichroinin.com As Co-Director of Moonfish Theatre, Máiréad hashas created numerous theatre works for adults and young people, incorporating bilingualism, music, technology, movement, and puppetry. She has overseen collaborations with, among others, the Abbey Theatre (National Theatre Ireland), An Taibhdhearc (National Theatre for the Irish Language, Galway International Arts Festival, Dublin Theatre Festival, Dublin Fringe Festival, and Baboró International Arts Festival for Children. Moonfish are funded by the Arts Council of Ireland, Galway City Council, Culture Ireland, and Foras na Gaeilge, among others. a target=_blank rel=nofollow href=http:www.moonfishtheatre.comwww.moonfishtheatre.com As Druid Lecturer in the Drama and Theatre Studies Department, Máiréad co-ordinates the strong relationship between the department and Druid Theatre, Irelands longest running independent theatre company. Máiréad lectures on a broad range of courses in the department, including Producing; Irish Language Theatre; Ensemble Acting and Devising; Creative Arts Management and Body and Performance.Máiréads research interests include the dramaturgy of digital, sensory performance; archiving contemporary performance; intersections of place, body and technologies; ecological performance and technologies; bilingual and multilingual performance practices; and non-hierarchical processes of theatre creation.
