I am a clinical ethicist and a lecturer in medical ethics in the School of Medicine, University ofGalway. I have aPh.D in philosophy from the University of Essex and a post-doctoral qualification in clinical and organisation ethics from the Joint Centre for Bioethics,University of Toronto. My aim is to contribute to ethical debates in the field of healthcare, particularly insofar asthese debates have the potential to increase awareness ofthe rights of patients and of the need to reduce health disparities. I am also hoping to increase recognition of clinical ethics as a practice rooted in the broader discipline of healthcare ethics. My main researchinterests include end-of-life ethics, medical assistance in dying (MAID),Public - No restriction health ethics, organisation ethics, clinical ethics consultation and mental health ethics.
My teaching is currently focused on medical ethics, bioethics andclinical ethics. I am also interested in the regulation of medicine and in the ethical underpinnings of health law, particularly capacity legislation.
