Dr. Liam Morrison is based at the National University of Ireland, Galway. Liams research interests include the presence, speciation and bioavailability of toxic and essential trace elements and organic contaminants in marine and freshwater ecosystems, obtaining data to support policy on environmental protection. Liams research funding and award have included studies focused on characterisation and removal of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) in water and biological systems; development and application of analytical and chemical methods for studying the presence of microplastics in biotic and abiotic systems; nutrient dynamics and eco-physiology of opportunistic macroalgal blooms (including invasive species) in estuaries and coastal bays in order to understand the mechanisms behind macroalgal blooms in order to develop management tools to control their size; application of remote sensing techniques in the spatial and temporal determination of macroalgal blooms; marine radioactivity and sustainable development of marine resources in the context of global change.
Dr. Liam Morrison attended the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUI Galway), where he obtained his BSc Hons in Marine Science and was awarded a PhD degree from the Departments of Oceanography and Botany. Dr. Morrison was previously awarded a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Science Engineering and Technology (IRC) and a Marie Curie Host Fellowship at Queens University Belfast and was recently nominated as a Science Foundation of Ireland Funded Investigator (SFI-FI) within iCRAG (Irish Centre for Research in Applied Geosciences). Research interests include: presence, speciation and bioavailability of toxic and essential trace elements and organic contaminants in marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems, obtaining data to support policy on environmental protection; characterisation and removal of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) in water and biological systems; development and application of analytical and chemical methods for studying the presence of microplastics in biotic and abiotic systems; nutrient dynamics and eco-physiology of opportunistic macroalgal blooms (including invasive species) in estuaries and coastal bays understand the mechanisms behind macroalgal blooms in order to develop management tools to control their size; application of remote sensing techniques in the spatial and temporal determination of macroalgal blooms; marine radioactivity and sustainable development of marine resources in the context of global change. Dr. Morrison established and currently manages and drives the research agenda for a Ryan Institute core facility at NUIG - the Chemical Monitoring Facility (CMF). The facility, which is part of the ASSEMBLE Plus international infrastructure, currently directly supports 2 Post-Docs, 10 PhD students and 3 MSc students, 1 Research Assistant, in addition to many other researchers form the Colleges of Science and Engineering, and Medicine, Nursing amp; Health Sciences within NUIG. This platform also facilitates researchers and collaborative national and international projects. Dr. Morrison (h-index =31, i10-index = 51, Citations = 2802, 2492 since 2016) ResearchGate Score = 36.58) has published gt;70 peer reviewed journal papers in leading international journals [including Environment International (7.297 IF), Water Research (7.051 IF), Chemical Engineering Journal (6.735 IF), Environmental Science and Technology (6.653 IF), etc.]. He has also presented over 130 conference papers at nationalinternational conferences (in 20 different countries) (three as invited speaker). To date, with collaborators, he has successfully competed for research funding awards of 6,675,270 (Independent PI: 1,022,123). He is currently supervising and co-supervising 5 Ph D students, 3 MSc students and 2 Postdoctoral Fellows and 1 Research Assistant, and has previously supervisedco-supervised 4 PhD students, 4 MScMAME students, 3 post-docs, 10 visiting international and 19 fourth year students to completion. Dr. Morrison is the director of the new MSc Programme in Mrrine and Freshwater Resources: Mnagement (1MFR) which is coomencing in September 2021.He was external examiner (2013-2017) for the BSc program in Environmental Management (Level 7) for Sligo Institute of Technology. Dr. Morrison has had the opportunity to gain extensive teaching experience in several undergraduate and MSc programmes at NUI Galway. He previously served on the management committee of a COST action [EU Cost Action ES1205, ENTER - Engineered Nanomaterials (ENMs) from Wastewater Treatment and Stormwater] and has acted as advisor to several local authorities and state agencies on drinking water quality and Public - No restriction health issues, and was nominated by the EPA as an Irish expert to attend the Water JPI Exploratory Workshop on the topic of Closing the Water Cycle Gap Sustainable Water Management (2016 and 2019 Dublin). Dr. Morrison is also a member of the marine group for the Invasive Alien Species (IAS) Horizon Scanning Workshop for the island of Ireland.
