PhD projects

Cuirim fáílte roimh thograí taighde faoi mo stiúir i réimse na hainmeolaíochta (go háirithe an staidéar ar logainmneacha, mion-logainmneacha, sloinnte, ainmneacha pearsanta agus leasainmneacha), chomh maith le tograí taighde a dhíríonn ar litríocht, stair agus cultúr meánaoiseach na hÉireann. I welcome proposals from potential PhD candidates for research projects under my supervision in the field of onomastics (particularly on place-names, minor names, surnames, personal names, nicknames) and on projects researching medieval Irish literature, history and culture more generally.

Biography

Is Léachtóir (Ollamh Cúnta) le Gaeilge é an Dr Liam Ó hAisibéil i Scoil na dTeangacha, na Litríochtaí agus na gCultúr ag Ollscoil na Gaillimhe, áit a múineann sé modúil fochéime agus iarchéime san ainmeolaíocht (ainmneacha, sloinnte, logainmneacha) agus ar litríocht mheánaoiseach na hÉireann. Ó thaobh cúrsaí taighde de, tá spéis ar leith aige sna logainmneacha agus i bhfeidhmeanna na logainmneacha i litríocht mheánaoiseach na Gaeilge. Tá taighde suntasach déanta aige ar shloinnte oileán na hÉireann agus ar ghalldú sloinnte Gaelacha agus is comhúdar é, in éineacht leis an Dr Kay Muhr, ar an Oxford Dictionary of Family Names of Ireland a d'fhoilsigh Oxford University Press in 2021. Ceapadh an Dr Ó hAisibéil mar bhall den Choiste Logainmneacha (An Roinn Turasóireachta, Cultúir, Ealaíon, Gaeltachta, Spóirt agus Meán) don tréimhse 2024-2027.

Dr Liam Ó hAisibéil is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in Irish in the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Galway where he lectures on onomastics (names, surnames, place-names) and medieval Irish literature at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Dr Ó hAisibéil's research interests include the analysis of place-names and the functions of place-names in medieval literature. He has also completed significant research on Irish surnames and their anglicisation over time and is co-author (with Dr Kay Muhr) of the Oxford Dictionary of Family Names of Ireland, published by Oxford University Press in 2021. Dr Ó hAisibéil was recently appointed as a member of the Placenames Committee (Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media) for the period 2024-2027.

Research Interests

Táim ag díriú ar dhá réimse taighde ar leith faoi láthair, mar atá anailís ar phróiseas an aistriúcháin i gcás sloinnte na nGael san 18ú agus sa 19ú haois, agus modhanna taighde sna daonnachtaí digiteacha a úsáid chun staidéar a dhéanamh ar fheidhm liteartha logainmneacha i litríocht mheánaoiseach na hÉireann.

I am currently engaged in two areas of research within onomastics, specifically an analysis of the translated forms of Irish surnames in the 18th and 19th centuries, and in adopting approaches from the digital humanities to study the use of place-names for literary effect in medieval Irish literature.
