Research Interests
I have published widely on Chilean crime fiction, with a focus on politics, history, memory and human rights. I am currently working on women crime writers and issues of gender equality.
Teaching Interests
My main research-led teaching interests are in Latin American, particularly Chilean, narrative and film, and also comparative literature and culture, particularly the crime genre. I coordinate the Final Year BA Spanish and am co-Director of the Masters in International Contemporary Literature and Media.
On the BA in Spanish and Latin American Studies, I teach first year Mundo Hispano to Beginner and Intermediate students, second year Modern Spanish-Language Drama, and Final Year Human Rights and Literature, as well as language. In the Global Languages programme, I teach on Memory, Memorialisation and Representations of Conflict in Final Year. I teach on the ICLM MA on the module Contemporary Literary Genres.
Biography
I am Head of Spanish and Latin American Studies at University of Galway (since January 2023). Previously I served as Head of the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures from 2014-2020.
I am co-founder of the International Crime Genre Research Network (founded in Galway in 2005). Information on current and past conferences can be found at: International Crime Genre Research Network – The ICGRN is a scholarly association for academics working on the crime genre in all its forms across the globe.
