PhD projects

Gene therapy approaches for muscular dystrophy. The project is on the development of a gene therapy strategy for muscular dystrophy. Therapeutic transgenes will be examined in a pre-clinical genetic animal model. My interests are in understanding basic mechanisms of muscle biology and the application of genesstem cells to disease where muscle is a target for therapy.

Personal profile

Biography

Dr Karl McCullagh is a lecturer in Department of Physiology and associated with the Regenerative Medicine Institute at NUIG. He has extensive international experience working in North America, Italy and UK, on cellular mechanisms regulating muscle adaptation to innervation, injury and neuromuscular disease. His research group is now exploiting this to further understand basic mechanisms and develop therapeutic interventions for neuromuscular disease including Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), using viral and non-viral methods. We are currently interested in genetically modulating and characterizing the effects of neuronal nitric oxide synthase, rectifying calcium dysregulation, and the microvasculature in mouse models of muscle disease including muscular dystrophy and muscle atrophy. He currently teaches and supervises students at undergraduate and postgraduate level on human physiology, and cell and gene therapy.
