Tá an Dr John Walsh ina Ollamh Comhlach le Gaeilge é i Scoil na dTeangacha, na Litríochtaí agus na gCultur, Ollscoil na Gaillimhe. Ó 2010, tá taighde á dhéanamh aige faoi nuachainteoirí mionteangacha, daoine nár tógadh leis na teangacha sin ach a labhraíonn go líofa agus go rialta iad. Tá saineolas aige chomh maith ar na meáin mhionteanga, ar an mbeartas teanga, ar an ilteangachas, ar theanga agus gnéasúlacht agus ar theanga agus forbairt shocheacnamaíoch.Ó 2012-2015, bhí sé ina Leas-Déan (Taighde) i gColáiste na nDán, na hEolaíochtaí Sóisialta agus an Léann Cheiltigh agus ghníomhaigh sé mar Leas-Déan (Comhionannas, Éagsúlacht, Cuimsiú agus Daoine) ó 2021-2023. Dhein an Dr Walsh PhD in Ollscoil Chathair Bhaile Átha Cliath (DCU) faoi thionchar na Gaeilge ar fhorbairt shocheacnamaíoch na hÉireann. Tá MA sa Chaidreamh Idirnáisiúnta (Socheolaíocht, Dlí, Eacnamaíocht Pholaitiúil) aige ó DCU chomh maith, agus BA sa Ghaeilge agus sa Bhreatnais ó Choláiste na hOllscoile, Baile Átha Cliath. Roimh dó teacht go Gaillimh, doibrigh an Dr Walsh leis an mBiúró Eorpach do Theangacha Neamhfhorleathana sa Bhruiséil agus mar iriseoir leis na craoltóirí poiblí RTÉ agus TG4 agus leis an raidió neamhspleách áitiúil agus náisiúnta. Is craoltóir deonach é leis an raidió pobail áitiúil Flirt FM. Since 2010, he has been researching new speakers of minority languages, people who were not raised speaking those languages but who speak them fluently and regularly. Other areas of expertise are minority language media, language policy, multilingualism, language and sexualityand language and socioeconomic development. From 2012-2015, he was Vice-Dean (Research) in the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies and from 2021-2023 he served as Vice-Dean (Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and People).Dr Walshs PhD on the influence of the Irish language on Irelands socio-economic development was awarded by Dublin City University. He holds an MA in International Relations (Sociology, Law, Political Economy), also from DCU, and a BA in Irish and Welsh from University College Dublin. Before coming to the University of Galway, Dr Walsh worked for the European Bureau for Lesser Used Languages in Brussels and as a journalist with Public - No restriction broadcasters RTÉ and TG4 and with local and national independent radio. He continues to broadcast on local community radio station Flirt FM.
