Biography

I took my BA (English amp; History) at NUI Galway in 1992 and was awarded my Ph.D. by the NUI in 2002 for a study of the works of John Banville. I lectured in English at NUI Galway from 2002-4 and 2006-9 and from 2004-6 was an IRCHSS Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Universitys Moore Institute. In 2009 I became the Universitys John McGahern Lecturer in Creative Writing. I am author of John Banville (2009), editor of The John McGahern Yearbook (4 vols. 2008-11), have published essays in the areas of contemporary Irish fiction and culture and the history and practice of literary reviewing, and was a main reviewer of new Irish fiction for The Irish Times from 1999 to 2010.I was Academic Director of The International John McGahern Seminar, held in Leitrim from 2007-2013.I was the designer of the BA with Creative Writing at University of Galway and formerly directed the programme (2008-14), and more recently I have redesigned, and currently direct,an expanded version of the programme, now titled The BA in English and Creative Writing.I amformerly also director of our MA in Writing (2014 - 2019).My special interests are creative writing and practice, and twentieth-century literature and culture, with special period emphasis on the contemporary period (post-1950s) and special national interest in Irish fiction. I have specific author interests in John Banville, John McGahern and Patrick McCabe.
