Personal profile

Biography

My current position is as a Personal Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, University of Galway. I have spent over40 years involved in pharmacological and toxicological research, 8 of which have been in industry.

Research Interests

My research has centred on preclinical animal models of depression, most particularly investigating the olfactory bulbectomized and whether this myriad of changes associated with this model can be attenuated by chronic treatment with antidepressants, both established and novel treatments. This research has demonstrated how valuable the integrated approach can be in ascertaining interactions between behavioural, physiological, neurochemical and immune changes. A similar approach has been taken with other animal models under my direction, such as the Forced Swim Test and lipopolysaccharide models. This research has resulted in over 100 peer-reviewed Public - No restrictionations.

Teaching Interests

A wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities in the areas of Pharmacology and Toxicology, across Science, Medicine and Nursing
