Biography
Prof. John Carey received his medical degree from U.C.D. in 1993, and completed his postgraduate training in the USA at Tufts University Medical School, Boston (1994-1995), Boston University Medical Centre (1995-1998), The Cleveland Clinic (2003-2007) and Case Western Reserve University (M.S., 2004-2006). As a consultant physician on Cape Cod in Internal Medicine he was voted number 1 doctor(2002)and number 1 doctors office (2002 & 2003). He was a consultant physician in the Department of Rheumatic Diseases, and Centre for Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Disease, at the Cleveland Clinic prior to returning to Galway University in 2007. He has subspecialty clinical interests in osteoporosis, arthritis and vasculitis. He is a Fellow member of The Royal College of Physicians in Ireland, and an established member of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, Past President of The International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD), a member of the Committee for Scientific Affairs of The International Osteoporosis Foundation, past member of the Clinical Practice Action Group of the European Calcified Tissue Society, and recently established EULAR study group of Geriatric Rheumatology. He was promoted to Professor in Medicine at The University of Galway in 2015 in recognition of his research and educational contributions. His clinical research relates to improving our epidemiology, co-morbidity and outcomes among patients with arthritis, osteoporosis and vasculitis, diagnostic testing and electronic health information. He has published 6 book chapters on osteoporosis and osteoarthritis and over 100 peer-reviewed original scientific publications. His other interests include sport, nature and music.
