Johnis an Associate Professor and Director of the Doctoral Programme in Clinical Psychology at the University of Galway. He is a Chartered Forensic and Clinical Psychologist with the British Psychological Society (BPS) and the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI). He is an Associate Fellow of both the British Psychological Society and the Psychological Society of Ireland.
John completed the University of Glasgow NHS Scotland professional training scheme in Clinical Psychology. He worked in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Edinburgh as Lecturer in Forensic Clinical Psychology until 2000. He later took up employment as a Senior Forensic Clinical Psychologist with the Department of Justice/Irish Prison Service before joining the University of Galway in 2004.
In his professional practice he specialises in criminal casework and forensic risk assessment. He also provides a clinical and forensic consultancy service to various bodies including State agencies concerned with the administration of criminal justice and policing. His research interests lie broadly within the areas of forensic clinical psychology and adult mental health
.John is currently Honorary Treasurer of the Division of Clinical Psychology, The Psychological Society of Ireland. He is a commtee member and former Chair of the Postgraduate Accreditation Committee of The Psychological Society of Ireland.
Within the Univesity of Galway he is the Director of the DPsychSc (Clinical Psychology) Programme, a member of School of Psychology Executive, Director of Taught Postgraduate Programmes, and the School of Psychology Academic Integrity Advisor. He is also a member of the University Research Sabbatical Leave Committee.
John Bogues research interests include such areas as forensic clinical psychology, military resilience training, and suicide prevention stategies. John is a member of the West of Ireland Suicide Research Alliance (WISRA) and the REX (Risky and Extreme Behaviour) research group.
