Personal profile

Biography

I am a Lecturer (above the bar) in the School of Computer Science at the University of Galway. I hold a PhD from LUMS University, Pakistan, where I was fortunate to work under the supervision of Professor Asim Karim. My doctoral dissertation, titled “Semantic Smoothing Strategies for Improved Text Classification and Clustering” focused on developing novel techniques to enhance the performance of text mining models by addressing data sparsity and semantic ambiguity. These challenges remain central to natural language processing and information retrieval.

My primary research interests lie in the broader areas of data mining and machine learning, with a strong emphasis on both algorithmic foundations and their deployment in real‑world, impact‑driven applications. I am particularly drawn to problems involving unstructured or semi‑structured text data, and I enjoy bridging the gap between theoretical advances and practical solutions.

Before joining my current institution, I worked as a Post‑Doctoral Researcher at the Insight Centre for Data Analytics, University of Galway, based at the Data Science Institute. During this time, I contributed to projects that involved the development and refinement of language resources, and I gained valuable experience in working with Knowledge Graphs and Linked Open Data. These areas continue to inform my current research.

o   My ongoing research portfolio is diverse and includes:

o   Text categorization and clustering – developing scalable, semantically aware models for organising large document collections;

o   Text summarization – both extractive and abstractive approaches, with an interest in domain‑adaptive summarisation;

o   Sentiment analysis – fine‑grained opinion mining and aspect‑based sentiment detection across social media and product reviews;

o   Leveraging eye‑tracking data for NLP applications – exploring how human reading patterns can inform and improve language models;

o   Cyber security – particularly in relation to threat intelligence from textual sources, such as logs, reports, and online communications.

I am actively seeking collaborative research opportunities and am very open to interdisciplinary work that combines machine learning with linguistics, cognitive science, or security. Whether you are interested in joint publications, grant proposals, or simply exchanging ideas, I would be delighted to hear from you.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you share similar interests or if you believe our research could complement each other. I look forward to exploring potential synergies.
