Biography

Dr. Icaro Veloso Soares is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Translational Medical Device Lab at the School of Engineering, University of Galway. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the Federal Center for Technological Education of Minas Gerais (CEFET-MG), Brazil, in 2017 and 2020, respectively, and earned his Ph.D. in Electronic Engineering from the Université de Rennes, France, in 2023. His doctoral research focused on adaptive wireless power transfer for ultra-miniature, deep-implanted bioelectronic devices.

Dr. Soares was previously a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institut d'Electronique et des Technologies du numéRique (IETR), Rennes. During his Ph.D., he was a visiting researcher at the Microwaves and Antennas Group (MAG), École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Earlier in his academic journey, he was also a visiting student at Southeast Technological University, Waterford, Ireland, from 2014 to 2015.

Beyond academia, Dr. Soares has industry experience as an R&D Electronic Engineer at IBBx Innovation in São Paulo, Brazil, where he designed, optimized, and tested high-frequency devices for wireless power transfer and energy harvesting systems, as well as developed electromagnetic models for IoT applications. He also worked as an Electronic Engineer at Stellantis (Fiat Automobiles) in Betim, Brazil, contributing to the Infotainment & Telematics and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) teams, where he was involved in technical specification analysis, component development, and EMC validation.

His research interests lie in applied electromagnetism, focusing on wireless power transfer for implantable bioelectronics, wave physics, and numerical analysis of electromagnetic systems. His work has been recognized with several awards, including:

  • Student Presentation Award at BioEM 2021;
  • Outreach Award in the local edition of “Ma thèse en 180 secondes” in Rennes (2023);
  • Best Thesis Award (2024) at both the local level (awarded by the Fondation Université de Rennes) and the French national level (awarded by the Société de l'Électricité, de l'Électronique et des Technologies de l'Information et de la Communication).

Dr. Soares is an active member of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S) and the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S).
