Personal profile

Biography

I am an accomplished researcher, with a BSc in Biomedicine and a MSc and PhD in Health Sciences with significant Irish postdoctoral research expertise within Infectious disease and Environmental Microbiology. I disseminate my research in specialised journals (11 manuscripts) and national and international conferences.Currently, Im involved in two main topics of research namely: environmental microbiology and infectious diseases. On the first topic, Im working with adsorption-based biotechnology to integrate methane emission mitigation and valorisation, focusing on methanotrophic bacteria and a specific type of adsorbent material. On the second topic, Im working on understanding host-pathogen interactions and how the bacteria respond to different types of conditions. Ive been working with Streptococcus pyogenes since my MSc in Brazil, and I was pleased to be able to work with this in Ireland now. In order to do this, I had to establish a collaboration with Dr Mary Meehan from the Irish Meningitis and Sepsis Reference Laboratory in Dublin and it was a huge milestone towards my final aim to become a PI. This demonstrates my capacity to engage and contact different people to work in a collaborative manner that will eventually lead to great achievements.

Research Interests

Id like to think of myself as a general microbiologist. By that I mean that Ive worked in different areas of microbiology such as human clinical microbiology, veterinary microbiology, human virology and environmental microbiology. The common link among these areas is molecular microbiology. This is the subject I always focused on, and I consider myself as an experienced molecular microbiologist with an extensive knowledge in nucleic acid and protein extraction, as well as real-time PCR, gene and genome sequencing, genomics and transcriptomics analysis. However, my main research interest ishuman clinical microbiology, specially Group A Streptococcus. This pathogen has always been my main topic of research since 2012 and Im working towards to develop more studies in this area.
