PhD projects

Dr. Brychkovas research focuses on the application of cutting-edge research and technologies for meeting needs in agriculture and agrifood sectors. With deep skills in agri-genetics and agri-biotechnologies, crop modelling and GIS, Dr Brychkova is highly inter-disciplinary and engaged in training and research on a wide range of agri-related topics, spanning agri-production, food security and sustainability. The main goal of her research is to identify and improve the alternative novel food products.

Personal profile

Biography

Dr Galina Brychkova is a lecturer in agricultural sciences at the Plant and AgriBiosciences Research Centre, School of Biological and Chemical Sciences, University of Galway. Her background is in genetics and biotechnology, which she was awarded in 2000 upon defending her MSc thesis, `The influence of intravenous immunoglobulin substances on the granulocyte-macrophage link of the human immune system. She continued her research career in the field of genetics and biotechnology and was awarded a PhD in Plant Genetics in 2004 for her research on engineering the metal-tolerant and oil-degrading transgenic plants that carry genes encoding rhamnolipid biosynthesis. Galinas primary research is focused on the application of cutting-edge research and technologies to meet needs in the agriculture and agrifood sectors. With deep skills in agri-genetics and agri-biotechnologies, Dr. Brychkova is highly inter-disciplinary and engaged in training and research on a wide range of agri-related topics, spanning agri-production, food security, and sustainability. To date, Galina has supervised and co-supervised over fifty undergraduate and postgraduate students. Galina provides lectures to a number of undergraduate (Agricultural Sciences, Plant amp; AgriBiosciences) and Master Degree programmes (MSc AgriFood Sustainability amp; Technology [AST], MSc Climate Change, Agricultute, and Food Security [CCAFS], MSc AgriBiosciences, and MSc Biotechnology). In 2023, Galina was awarded a Master Degree in Academic Practice.Galina is a member of the Education and Learning Sub-committee for BioInnovator Campus, which is working with AgriFood and Ag-Tech Companies in Ireland.Biotechnologist by education, Galinas major research expertise is molecular biology, plant and animal tissue culture, biochemistry, enzymology, and metabolomics. In recent years, her research area has also included GIS for climate adaptation and modelling. The main goal of her research is to identify and improve alternative novel food products and to solicit science and biotechnologies for meeting needs in developed and developing countries. Galina has been an author on over 30 peer-reviewed papers, 3 book chapters, and over 22 conference papers.
