Biography
Fiona Bateman is Director of the MA in Public Advocacy and Activism, and a lecturer in English and Film. She is a graduate of UCD (B.Soc.Sc.) and of NUI Galway (now University of Galway) (MA in Culture and Colonialism), where she also completed her PhD, "The Spiritual Empire: Irish Catholic Missionary Discourse in the Twentieth Century". Her research focuses on Ireland and Africa, the Irish foreign missions, and the Nigeria-Biafra war 1967-70. Her publications address a wide range of missionary-related topics, including a book chapter about the stained glass windows from Clarke Studios in Dublin, which were designed for churches in various African countries. She teaches some film studies classes as well as modules in literature, including African fiction and North American literature.
