Biography
Dr. Eoin King is a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering and Programme Director for Mechanical Engineering at the University of Galway. His research focuses on environmental acoustics, noise control, transportation noise, and the role of sound in sustainable urban design. He has led and collaborated on projects examining the measurement, modelling, and mitigation of environmental noise, with a particular interest in linking technical solutions to policy and community engagement. He has been invited to discuss noise and its health impacts on national radio and television in Ireland.
Dr. King is a member of the European Commission Noise Expert Group and has previously served on the Board of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering (USA) and the International WELL Building Institute’s Sound Concept Advisory Panel. He has authored or co-authored more than 70 academic journal papers, book chapters, conference papers, and technical reports, including one book. His work is widely cited in the fields of acoustics and environmental noise policy.
Following EU-funded postdoctoral research on noise assessment and control, he founded a noise and vibration consulting company before joining the University of Hartford — the only U.S. university offering specialist undergraduate programmes in both acoustics and music. In 2021, he returned to Ireland to join the University of Galway, where he has secured competitive national and international research funding. In 2023, he established the Galway Sound Lab, a research and outreach initiative dedicated to exploring sound, noise, and their effects on human health and the environment.
He holds a B.A., B.A.I. in Mechanical Engineering (2003), a Postgraduate Diploma in Statistics (2007), and a PhD (2008) in Environmental Acoustics, all from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland.
Beyond his academic work, Dr. King has coached women’s rugby, organised a TEDx event, and completed the New York City Marathon.
