Biography

Eoghan Clifford is a chartered engineer and Professor of Engineering at the University of Galway. He is currently the Head of Discipline of Civil Engineering. Eoghans key research and educational interests lie in the areas of wastewater and water engineering, process modelling and life cycle assessment. Eoghans research team has ongoing and significant EU, national and industry research funding. His team currently coordinates ENERGE (Interreg NWE), is technical lead on INNOQUA (H2020) and a WP leader on NEPTUNUS project (InterReg Atlantic Areas). He has previously coordinated the Waternomics (FP7) project and a variety of projects funded by national and industry sources through competitive research grants. He has been involved in projects with a total value of €70 million. Of these he has been the coordinator, principal investigator or co-PI on projects worth €55 million.

He has also collaborated with the technical University of Eindhoven and other partners on modelling the aerodynamics of paralympic cyclists on tandem andhandcycles.

Outside of the research and commercial fields he has a particular interest also in policy development and improving educational outcomes and awareness of the need for a more sustainable approach to resource consumption. His key research and educational interests lie in the areas of fluid dynamics, cycling aerodynamics, wastewater and water engineering and the development of tools and sustainable technology that can improve outcomes in these sectors. Co-inventor of 6 patented technologies in the fluid dynamics, water and wastewater sectors. He is co-inventor of the Vortech technology and technical advisor to the Vortech Spin-out company - www.vortechws.com. 

Co-authored over 400 contributions including peer reviewed journal papers conference papers, technical reports and other conference or media contributions Author of market, policy and research reports for the Environmental Protection Agency, National Roads Authority, local government and private industry, Engineers Ireland.

Reviewer for numerous journals including Water Research, Science of the Total Environment, Journal of Cleaner Production etc. Scientific proposal reviewer for Enterprise Ireland, the Irish Environmental Protection Agency, the National Institute of Health (USA) and the Natural Environment Research Council (UK), Swiss Science Foundation Switzerland). Chair of the Scientific Evaluation Panel for the 2025 Water4All EU Joint Transnational Call.

External PhD examiner in Ireland, Spain, Netherlands and the UK 

Member of the Engineers Ireland Expert Panel for the State of Infrastructure in Ireland Report in 2018. External Programme Review Board (Civil Engineering) for Sligo Institute of Technology. External Examiner for Trinity College Dublin Civil Engineering Masters Programme.

Eoghan is a 4-time paracycling world champion and 2-time world championship bronze medal winner (2014 - 2016). He also on a gold and bronze medal in cycling at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. He has won races at national and international level in able-bodied and paracycling events.
