Biography

Edward Jones is a Personal Professor in Electrical amp; Electronic Engineering at University of Galway. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers of Ireland, and a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He holds the BE degree in Electronic Engineering (First Class Honours), and the PhD degree in Electronic Engineering, both from University of Galway.His PhD research topic was on the development of computational auditory models for speech processing. He served as Head of the School of Engineering at University of Galway from September 2021 to May 2023. From June 2010 to December 2016, he served as Vice-Dean of the College of Engineering amp; Informatics, with responsibility for Performance, Planning and Strategy. He also has a number of years of industrial experience in senior R amp;D positions, in both indigenous start-up and multinational companies. From 1996 to 1997, he was withToucan Technology Ltd. where he was responsible for thedevelopment of DSP algorithms for Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) modems, while from 2000 to 2001, he held the position of Leader, DSP Development, in the AccessProducts Division of PMC-Sierra Inc. with responsibility for algorithm development for the companys symmetric DSL (SDSL and SHDSL) modem technology. From 2001 to 2002, he was Senior DSP Architect with Innovada Ltd., developing embedded voice-band modem technology, and from 2002 to 2003, he was a DSP architect for Duolog Technologies Ltd, working onWireless LAN PHY development. He also served on international telecommunications standardisation groups ANSI T1E1.4 and ETSI TM6. His current research interests are in signal processing and machine learning algorithm development and implementation for applications in connected and autonomous vehicles, biomedical engineering, speech andaudio processing and environmentalagriculture applications. He has co-authored more than 110 peer-reviewed journal papers and has supervised 30 PhD students to completion as Primary or Co-supervisor. He has been awarded research funding from a variety of Public - No restriction andprivate sources, including Taighde Éireann - Research Ireland (previously Science Foundation Ireland), Enterprise Ireland, the Irish Research Council, the EU Horizon 2020 programme, and a number of Irish andmulti-national companies. He is joint Director of the Connaught Automotive Research (CAR) Group in Electrical amp; Electronic Engineering at NUI Galway, and is a Co-PI in Lero, the Research Ireland Centre for Software. From 2009 to 2010 he was a Visiting Researcher in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Columbia University, New York, USA, and has also been appointed a Visiting Fellow in theSchool of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia. He also regularly acts as arefereefor severaljournals and international conferences in the area of signal processing.
