Personal profile

Biography

I graduated from Vilnius University, Lithuania in 1992 and received my PhD degree in natural sciences in 1997 from the Institute of Physics, Lithuania. I received a Young Scientists Award from the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences in 1999 for the research work carried out during the PhD candidate period based on peer-review papers. In 2001 I joined Atmospheric Research Group at the Department of Experimental Physics, National University of Ireland Galway, where I have been working since. My most significant contributions on marine aerosols have been published in the journal Nature in 2004, 2016 and 2017 and numerous articles in other most prestigious journals. My other novel idea is using carbon, nitrogen and sulphur isotopes for the advance source apportionment of carbonaceous aerosols simultaneously using stable and radiocarbon isotopes. During my career I developed excellent collaborative skills and continued collaboration with my former Lithuanian colleagues. The research excellence and collaborative efforts have been recognized with the Lithuanian National Science Award in 2011, the most prestigious award in Lithuania and the Award for Outstanding Lithuanian Scientist in 2015 and Global Lithuania Award in 2025. I published 150+ peer-review papers to-date and I am among the top 1% of cited authors in the Geosciences discipline in Clarivate Analytics ISI Web of Science database with ~2000 total citations in the last decade. I have been awarded a Leader badge on Research.com in 2022, 2023 and 2025 having a national rank of 5 in Environmental Sciences in Ireland. I have provided critical research and technical support for Mace Head Atmospheric Research Station which has significantly contributed towards the establishing Mace Head infrastructure as the top atmospheric research infrastructure in the world. I am a member of the Mace Head Management Committee since 2010 and Mace Head Operations Manager since 2016. I am a reviewer for many international research journals and has served as a reviewer or panel expert for national research bodies (EU Commission, Portugal, Spain, Germany, Denmark, Serbia, Lithuania, Qatar).
