Biography

Dr. Dan Dwyer is Head of Discipline of Irish Language Media Studies at University of Galway. He worked for a number of years as a television producer and director for the Irish language Public - No restriction service broadcaster TG4 producing the weekly magazine programme Idir Mhagadh s Dáiríre as well as a number of documentary films. Dan began teaching media production and journalism in the early 2000s and designed and delivered a unique online journalism and media production course for people with disabilities on behalf of the Rehab Foundation known as Mediability. He has taught media studies through the Irish language at University of Galway since 2006 and he completed his PhD thesis on the Irish in Britain as a media audience in 2023. Dan is a founding member of Club Scannán Sailearna, a Gaeltacht film society that has brought the best of Irish and World cinema to Galway audiences since 2007.

Research Interests

Dans research interests are in the relationship between media and audiences with a particular focus on diasporic identities in the Irish context. His PhD thesis, entitled The role of Irish and Irish-themed media in the formation and maintenance of Irish cultural identity in Britain was completed in 2023.

Teaching Interests

Dan teaches Media Studies through the Irish language from the complimentary perspectives of production studies, textual analysis and media audience studies. His current modules include Media and Society, Media Audiences and Textual Analysis of the Media which form part of Communications Studies through the Irish language at undergraduate and postgraduate level. He is also the co-ordinator of the final year BA Research Project.
