Biography
Dr Claire MacGilchrist is a Lecturer in Podiatric Medicine and Programme Director of the BSc. Podiatric Medicine Programme at the University of Galway. Claire previously lectured in Podiatry at Glasgow Caledonian University and was employed as a Senior II Podiatrist and clinical tutor at The Southern General Hospital, Glasgow. During this time, Claire was working towards her PhD entitled Lower-limb risk factors for falls in older adults with Diabetes and graduated with this award in November 2012. Claire has an active interest in wellbeing and the diabetic foot, vascular medicine and falls, and has presented her work at a number of national and international conferences. Clinically, Claire is currently involved in vascular and complex foot clinics at Merlin Park Hospital Podiatry Clinic.
Research Interests
My research interests are in the area of Diabetes, Falls and vascular medicine. Previous PI roles include sitePI for NUI Galway on a large multi-centre RCT co-ordinated by the York Trials Unitentitled ARandomised Controlled Trial of a Multifaceted Podiatry Intervention for the Prevention of Falls in Older People (The REFROM Trial). I am also PI for an interdisciplinary project with NUI Galway colleagues in Microbiology and Occupational Healthinvestigating The specific characteristics of Endotoxin exposure to the Podiatrist during wound debridement in Diabetic Foot Disease. More recently, my research interestshave focused on the area of wellbeing and diabetic foot ulceration and this work has beenpresented internationally.
Teaching Interests
Currently, I am module leader for PO2060 Evidence-based Practice, PO400 Research Dissertation and PO5102 Vascular Disease (Masters Module). I also lead the vascular teaching component of the Undergraduate Podiatric Medicine programme (PO2080). I also teach on several Masters modules including Diabetic Foot Disease. I have a keen interest in the diabetic foot, vascular complications affecting the lower limb and the role of Podiatry in falls prevention among older adults.Clinically, Iregularly work in vascular, diabetes and generalassessment clinics. I currently supervisea number ofundergraduate research projectsand I am co-supervisor on 1PhD in the area of Diabetes. Igraduated with Pg Certificate in Teaching amp; Learning in 2013.
